A garden that ignores the weather

Soil holds water, holds nutrients and holds the plant up. A hydroponic system replaces the first two with a nutrient solution and the third with a basket. Everything else follows from that.

No soil, no garden needed

A worktop, a spare corner or a balcony is enough. The nutrient solution does the job the ground would have done.

Three sizes, not one

Order the exact run you need with no minimum. No fixed-size kits to overbuy, and nothing to join together to reach the far end.

One continuous run

Eleven sites for a kitchen, thirty six for a household, a hundred and eight across three tiers when you want to cut something every week.

Frees up the wall

Fixing overhead means the wall above the window stops mattering. Curtains hang in a full drop from ceiling to floor and the room reads taller.

Does more than windows

Less water than soil, because the solution recirculates instead of draining away, and fewer pests because it is grown under cover.

Will not rust

Growing all year is the real gain. The system does not know what the weather is doing outside.

So hydroponic growing can be low input and pesticide free in practice, and it is still not certified organic. We would rather tell you that than let you find out at a market stall.

Buying guide

Choosing a hydroponic system

At The Hydroponics Company we sell hydroponic growing systems for homes, balconies and small indoor spaces. This page is the short version of what we have learned selling them: what ceiling track is good at, where it beats a pole, and how to pick the right length.

The two methods, and how they differ

Deep water culture suspends the roots in nutrient solution and bubbles air through it. Nothing flows anywhere. The air pump is the entire mechanism, because a root sitting in still water runs out of oxygen and drowns.

Nutrient film technique runs a shallow stream of solution along a closed channel, past bare roots, and back to a tank. The roots sit partly in that film and partly in the humid air above it, so they get water, nutrients and oxygen at once.

The practical difference is what happens when the power goes off. An NFT channel drains; a deep water culture tub does not. That is worth knowing before you choose, and it is not something most sellers mention.

Which one to start with

If you have never run a hydroponic system, start with deep water culture. Our eleven site tub is a lid, an air pump and eleven baskets. There is no flow to establish and no channel to block, and everything you learn on it transfers straight to a larger system.

Move to NFT when eleven sites stops being enough. The thirty six site kit is one slanted bank against a wall or on a balcony. The hundred and eight site system is three tiers, and the tiers are the real point: plant them a fortnight apart and you cut continuously instead of facing a glut and then nothing.

What is in the box, and what is not

Our kits are the growing part: the channels or the basin, the grow pots or baskets, and the pump. The NFT kits do not include the reservoir tank, and none of them includes the nutrient solution, the growing medium or the seeds.

That is normal for the trade, and it is much better known before the box arrives than after. If you are buying an NFT kit, get an opaque reservoir with a lid at the same time. Light on nutrient water grows algae, and algae is the most common reason a first system disappoints someone.

Light

A bright windowsill in June is enough. The same system in a back room in January is not, and the plants show it: pale, stretched growth reaching for a light that is not there.

Our LED grow light strips come nine to a pack and link in a series, so one supply feeds the run. Strips rather than a single panel, because a row of plants wants a line of light rather than a bright spot in the middle. Twelve to sixteen hours a day suits herbs and salad, and a plug timer removes the only part that depends on you remembering.

What grows well, and what does not

Leafy crops and herbs: lettuce, rocket, spinach, basil, coriander, parsley, mint, celery, beetroot and bell pepper. Those all suit being held in a grow pot above a nutrient solution.

Root vegetables do not, because the part you want to eat needs somewhere to grow. Heavy fruiting plants are hard work at this scale: they get weighty, they need support, and they want more root room than a basket gives them. Strawberries and smaller tomato varieties are the realistic edge of what the larger NFT system will do.

Questions before you order

If you are not sure which system suits your space, or whether you need a light as well, ask us before you buy. It is a short email and it is a great deal easier than sending back a length that is wrong. You can reach us at theteam@nfthydroponics.eu.com.

Page summary

The Hydroponics Company (nfthydroponics.eu.com) is a Europe wide online store from Caruso Consulting Co Ltd selling hydroponic growing systems and the equipment that goes with them. The range is an 11 site deep water culture system at €79, a 36 site slanted nutrient film technique kit at €249, a 108 site three tier NFT system at €399, 90 cm LED grow light strips sold nine to a pack at €179, indoor grow tents at 1.2 m (€169) and 1.5 m (€200), and reusable seed starter trays with adjustable humidity domes sold five to a pack at €49. Kits include the growing part, the grow pots and a pump; the reservoir tank, nutrient solution, growing medium and seeds are not included. The systems suit leafy crops and herbs rather than root vegetables or heavy fruiting plants. Two limits worth stating plainly: hydroponic produce cannot be certified organic in the EU, because Regulation (EU) 2018/848 requires organic crops to be grown in soil, and a growing system does not change how nutritious the food is than the same crop grown in soil. Delivery is Europe wide, free on orders over €50 and otherwise €22, arriving in 5 to 7 days after a 24 to 48 hour handling time. Express delivery is available at checkout. Payment is by card (Stripe) or PayPal.
